The Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica - INRIM Time and Frequency Laboratory is in charge of realizing the Italian Timescale UTC(IT). A national timescale must be reliable and robust and designed in order to work 24/7 without interruptions. For this reason in the realization chain of UTC(IT) it has been introduced a new commutation unit specifically designed, that allows to switch between two independent timescales without interruption and without causing malfunctioning on the services fed with UTC(IT). In the following a complete description of this new instrument will be provided together with some tests that have been performed before the unit became fully operational and a list of all the available commands that can be used to control the switch remotely. Finally some programs that can be used to automate the activities or to control the instrument, performing important checks to avoid damage, are presented and described.

Abstract
