The new standards for the photometric characterization of LED sources and luminaires require the evaluation of the measurement uncertainty for every measured photometric and colorimetric quantities. Reliable and accurate photometric and colorimetric data are the basic requirement for designing a suitable and effective lighting system. This requirement increases flexibility in the selection of instruments and in the definition of the measurement procedure, but requires the development of a methodology for the measurement uncertainty evaluation, useful for industrial applications. Furthermore, the evaluation of measurement uncertainty is a compulsive requirement in several standard, indeed standards about lighting require not only the measurement uncertainty evaluation but also the evaluation of its relationship with the tolerance of instruments, device, luminaires and design. Unfortunately for industries and testing facilities is usually difficult to follow and apply the "Guide for the Evaluation of Measurement Uncertainty" , because it express the evaluation of uncertainty from a theoretical point of view, whereas industries need a more practical approach. To help industries the technical group that developed the CEN standard chose to specify detailed quantitative requirements and tolerances on the metrological characteristic of instruments and on the operating, environmental and geometrical conditions. These requirements where obtained considering an undeclared, but realistic, uncertainty level. But unfortunately also this approach has several counter effects and its application provide underestimations of different quantities of influences, like the measurement procedure and measuring instruments, just to cite the two most relevant. In order to overcome the drawbacks that are enlighted in the paper, it is also suggested a more practical approach to the uncertainty evaluation as well an example for a specific road lighting application is provided. The paper will present also the linkage between measurement uncertainty and tolerances, by means of a case study conducted in compliance with the standard requirements
