Abstract

The primary scope of road lighting is to assure safety to traffic and road users, pedestrians included. The contemporary development of new norms, the increment of design complexity of lighting systems and the need of good lighting performances for the whole installations life increased the necessity to verify on site lighting systems performances, on a specified periodicity. Usually in these verifications a high number of photometric measurements, as described in the CIE publications and in national and international standards, is performed with commercial instruments following a manual procedure. A mobile laboratory is the best answer to on site lighting installation verification problems. The mobile lab is able to carry out detailed measurements of the photometric parameters with uncertainties compatible with the norm also while running at high speed and in presence of traffic, for faster and more reliable results than manual on site verification. This paper describes some metrological aspects, with particular attention to the in loco characterization of street lighting system installations, following the Italian and European norms.
